My First Annoying Avon Encounter!

"HOW ANNOYING!" was the thought that immediately crossed my mind...

I come home from work, to find another unwelcome brochure intruding my front door.

I pick it up, throw it in the mail pile and dismiss it immediately.

I curse internally at the Avon lady, for I now have to remember to leave it at the front door, on the next Wednesday, so that she can pick it up.

I wish there was a way to tell her that I do not want these delivered to me, EVER!

BUT.... As night time rolls around and I've gotten over the initial intrusion, I pick up the brochure and decide to have a look. Just to look! "Hmmmm"....

$15 cleansers - "It's gotta be crap! My last cleanser cost me $50."
$15 mascaras - "Surely they're cheaply made?"
Lipsticks, eyeliners, blushes, brushes, moisturisers, sunscreens... - "GeeZ! there's a lot of ...!"

"Stupid book! How do I know if any of this stuff actually work?"

"Stupid book! Why do the prices have to be so cheap, that I almost want to find out?"

"Stupid book! Why do you have pictures of Reese Witherspoon looking so damn good? I really like Reese and hope she's not just doing this for the money."

My shopping logic: Whenever in doubt, leave it and if you're still thinking about it the next day, then you know to go back for it. The next day comes around... I'm still thinking about it.

So I do it. I decide to try the cleanser, mascara and eyeliner... I actually want to get more, but I stick to the basics, because it's my first time and only because I'm running out of these things anyway...

My catalog came with my Avon Lady's name, "Sam" and her contact details. I email her and she happily takes my order through email. I transfer $36 to her bank account and pray that she'll show up in 2 weeks.

2 weeks later... and I've been anxiously waiting... Sam arrives with my goodies... I'm excited as I open my new products...

"Finally, I'll get to find out if this stuff works and if it doesn't... I'm telling EVERYONE!"

I'm surprised that my "Anew Retroactive 2 in 1 Cleanser ($15)" actually works. I normally use Dermalogica, so this was a real downgrade in terms of price. I really like the little water beads in the cleanser. It feels refreshing. My skin feels clean and doesn't look shiny nor dry. My skin is really temperamental ranges from oily T-zone to flaky dry cheekbones, so it's important that I get a gentle product. This one's pretty gentle. "If this keeps up, then I might order the toner next time."

I'm particularly happy with my "Super Shock mascara ($15)", which promises to thicken and lengthen my lashes. My lashes don't look like Halle Berry in that Maxfactor commercial (which is digitally enhanced), but it works... And without the clumps! Definitely better than the last Maxfactor one I bought, which was always a clumpy mess.

My "ultra luxury black eyeliner ($5)" is good quality. It's actually comes on black and not a dark grey or blue shade. It also passes my second test- I can sharpen it with a pencil sharpener and tip doesn't fall off. I hate eyeliners that do that! Absolutely hate eyeliners that break off!!!!!

So verdict.... I feel like I've made some good buys...

I'm HAPPY! The products aren't bad. They're definitely better quality than some of the stuff I've bought in the past. My new cleanser was a definite bargain. I just might order again next time... just maybe, we'll see....

To all the existing Rep/STRs,

If you are a registered STR (Sales Training Representative) then you should have already received your invitation in the mail, regarding the upcoming "Sales Leadership" meeting.

The meeting will be held separately, for each district, during early May. It will cover all the details regarding the change of the payment plan to a "Sales Leadership" plan and your transition from STR to "Sales Leader". It is an important change and if you wish to continue/increase your success with Avon, then it is pertinent that you show up to this meeting.

If you are a Rep and want to know how to grow your Avon business, then I suggest that you immediately contact your STR or Team Leader and quickly get registered as an STR. If you are registered before the date of meeting, for your corresponding district, then you will be granted an invitation to the meeting.


About the new plan

The new "Sales Leadership" plan is based on a MLM model. If you don't know what that is, don't worry, that's what the meeting is for. But, for those familiar with this pay plan, I've been informed that it will be paid on four levels.

I'll post up a more thorough report on the new pay plan, as I get more info, probably after my meeting on May 7th. All you need to know, for now, is this:

If you wish to earn more than just the commission on your own sales, then you need to become a great "Sales Leader".

If you wish to grow your Avon business, and motivate others to do the same, then you need to become a great "Sales Leader".

Become a Sales Leader

If you are unsure about how to be a great "Sales Leader", but would certainly like to learn, then you need to get yourself under a great "Sales Leader" that will be willing to teach and help you get there. This is so important, because the team that your in, as well as your skills, will have immense effect on your success as a Sales Leader.

However, If you are happy just being an Avon Rep and servicing your customers, then don't worry! The new pay plan will not effect you and no one is going to take away your territory. The new Sales Leadership plan is just about recognising the efforts of Sales Leaders and finally giving them the credit (pay), that they most certainly deserve.

Note this, if you don't do it (jump up at the Sales Leader opportunity), there are many others that will, and that, to me, is loss income opportunity. Do you really want to miss out on a chance to earn extra income?

Last bit of news: The New Sales Leadership Plan is due to take effect on Campaign 13, 2009. All registered STRs, attending the Event, will be offered to sign up as a Sales Leader, for FREE. After this date, all Reps seeking Sales Leader title will be required to pay $25.

Are there too many Avon Reps in Australia?

A recent article in the Herald prompted me to think... How many Avon Representatives are there in Australia?

With between 2000-3000 representatives signing up per state... Is that too many? Should new recruits just give up now, thinking that they'll never stand a chance against the more seasoned representatives? Are you bound to your designated territory with fear of retribution if you should tread on another Reps territory?

I think not! Although Avon has been operating in Australia for over 25 years, the potential new customer base is still very large and relatively untouched. Avon has expanded their product lines and hence the typical customer is no longer just the mid 30's housewife, but both females and males in their 20's, 30's, 40's, and beyond. There's even a teenager range, well bring range and stuff for kids.

Many current Reps are not anywhere as successful as they wish to be, not that you can ever place a cap of the success level one wishes to be. That is, because not all Reps are working the business to the fullest potential.

They drop a few brochures, pass a few words, give away a few samples and then expect orders to come flourishing in. Although, this can bring some success, I guarantee you that it is not usually the case.

Worse still, some Reps aren't working at all. They sign up and just never get around to it. So don't let the sign up figures scare you. I guarantee that if you are willing to put in the effort, you will reap the rewards.

Successful Avon Reps will tell you that building a business likes this takes, time, patience, persistence and, of course, great customer service. There will be times of success and there will be moments of defeat.

For those that can't handle this merry-go-round, I say, go find a "steady paying job". What that means for the remaining Reps - They're loss is you're gain, so get working!

Just letting you know that there's an upcoming "Avon product seminar". It is being organised by the team at Avon Corporate for the Avon Reps in Sydney.

It will have all the products on display for you to touch, feel, smell and sample. Catherine Ryan from Avon Corporate will be doing a short presentation to update us on what's currently happening in the company and the upcoming changes. So, if you're already a Rep in Sydney or are interested in becoming a Rep, come along and meet everyone.

Costs involved with being an Avon Rep

If you're thinking about becoming an Avon rep, then here are the costs involved:

1. Signing up: usually a $20AUD fee, but sometimes there are special promotions where you can sign up for FREE!

2. Ordering brochures and samples: The brochures and samples all cost money and you get to decide how much or how little you wish to order. I normally order 75 brochures for $39. That's 48c each. Remember that you can re-use the brochures, so only order what you need! Also, the samples are good at proving to customers that the products actually work. I've had good success rates with the product samples.

3. Processing Fees: Avon currently charges each Rep a $7 processing fee for each order you place. You will make one order per campaign. It's $7 regardless of how big or small your order is. This is to cover the costs for handling and shipping.

4. Time: Yes, I consider time a cost, because every hour that you spend working, that's an hour that your not spending with your kids, partner, or friends. You, therefore, need to value your time. Walking around to deliver brochures and products can be fun, but time consuming. You also need time to sort, place orders and perform other admin tasks. Most Reps spend around 2-3 hours a week on admin and 2-3 hours delivering. I consider delivering good exercise, so I don't mind that at all. Adding up all the hours, you need to make sure that your returns are worth your effort. In my opinion, at least $30 profit for every hour you spend on the business.

5. Bad orders: I know this will suck, and it doesn't happen often but there are some dodgy customers out there. They place their order, then when you go to deliver decide they don't want it! They order the wrong things! They don't answer the door! Your calls! It's useless! Just make sure you use the Avon company's return policy, within the time frame to get 100% refund for the products. You should have an allocated Avon Rep in your area that collects returned products, which will save you on the shipping fees. The biggest cost here is time wasted on all the processing.

6. Personal Purchases: I'm an avid believer in practising what you preach! So if you're going to be selling Avon, you should be using Avon. Keep notes on the products you test, so that you can share your knowledge with customers. Shop away! But be mindful that your spending doesn't go out of hand, because the continuous sales can be pretty hard to resist! I like to think of this cost as an investment on education. =)

My Rules for Skin Care

Everyone has rules and routine for skin care, or at least everyone should have.

My skin:

I'd have to say that my skin is quite good, when I treat it good. I have breakouts every so often (due to that time of the month.. grrr) and when I forget to moisturise everyday, it can get dry around the cheekbones. But, when I stick to my routine and rules, my complexion is quite even, and I can get away without wearing a lot of makeup.


My routine:

Daily: - Morning: gentle cleanser, toner, moisturise, sunscreen, primer, apply make up.

- After work: remove makeup with gentle cleanser, moisturiser.

- Before bed: cleanser, toner, night moisturiser, eye cream.

Weekly: Exfoliate

Monthly: Face mask (Ok, I lie, As much as I'd like to do this monthly, I only remember when I'm sitting around the house with nothing to do, which doesn't happen often)


My rules:

- Always, always use SPF30+ everyday. It's been said everywhere, but not enough people do it. LISTEN! If you're going to do one good thing for your skin.. WEAR SUNSCREEN! And i don't mean Banana Boat or one's from the Cancer Council, get one that's made for the face, so you don't get an oily build up.

- Always apply a primer before makeup. I hate thinking that my makeup is getting into my pores and causing damage, so I always wear a primer, which creates a protective barrier between my skin and the make up. No make up artist will apply make up without and neither should you.

- Change products at least every 3-4 months. Some people stick with the same products their whole life and that's fine. But that's not for me. I find that when I use a product for too long, my skin builds a barrier against it and it's not as effective. This is especially true for cleansers and moisturisers. I also find that the weather plays a large part in how my skin is and so my summer skin care range is different from my winter range.

- Have a day moisturiser and a night moisturiser. Your day moisturiser should keep your skin soft and supple throughout the day, without making it oily or dry. Your night moisturiser is all about repairing the damage and will be a much heavier product.

- Stick to my routine! Daily, weekly, monthly!

This is the absolute minimum I must do in order to have great skin. What's you routine? And is it working for you?

Hmmm... I think my blog might be breaking some Avon rep rules. I hope not, but if you're an Avon Officer (if there is such a person) and you're reading this, then I swear that I'm not selling anything via this blog. That is not my purpose. A successful Avon Rep will...

My definition of successful is to be earning at least $50 per hour, that you work on your business.

If an Avon Rep makes $700 worth of sales per campaign, earning them 35% commission, that's $245 per campaign. If they work between 7 - 8 hours per campaign, they therefore meet my definition of success, earning $30 per hour. But, if they spent 10 hours working, then they do not meet my definition of success. Keep in mind, that different people have different definitions of success. This is just my benchmark and with the figures that the top Reps earn, it's quite an achievable one.

So here is, my opinion, of what it takes to be a successful Avon Rep.

A successful Avon rep will:

-earn a minimum of $30/hour they spend on the Avon business. I already said this, but just cementing my idea of success.

- spend at least 8 hours per campaign on the Avon business. Each campaign is circulated for 3 weeks, therefore 8 hours over the 3 weeks is the minimum requirement of time investment, I recommend. Successful Reps spend their time on physical deliveries, selling and advertising, training and administration tasks. I'll go into further details about the daily activities in another post, but this is just to give you an idea of the time required to be what I call successful.

- invest back into the business. This is important! Along with the brochures, samples are a great way for the customer to be able to try before they buy. Successful Reps don't scrooge when it comes to ordering samples. They are also savvy and know not to over order, or they'll be stuck with many out-dated samples. Good samples are the main-stream products that are always offered, such as cleansers, moisturisers and sunscreens. Other forms of investment include business cards, flyers, buying products to use in group demonstrations or as gifts for loyal customers. A professional image is important for your business and is well worth the investment.

- expand their potential customer base beyond the letterboxes in their given territory, and sell to people other than family and friends. Successful Avon Reps know that opportunity lies in every corner. Brochures can be left in Cafes and waiting rooms. Parties and fund raisers are always great income earning potentials. Word of mouth is by far the best form of advertising, so get out there and network, network, network.

- always put the customer first. Great customer service is the cornerstone to your success, but you didn't need me to tell you that. With the next Rep located just blocks away from you, your customer service is the only thing that will keep your customer coming back to you and not going to your competitor. So, smile, be reliable, professional and oh! A freebie every now and then doesn't hurt either.

- understand that there is an approximate 1% order rate. That means for every 100 brochures dropped, there is the likely chance that only one order will be placed. This is not the case, once you have built up a solid customer base, but it is a pretty close percentage for those that are starting out. It takes time for new customers to get used to the idea of ordering via brochures and usually take 3-4 brochure viewings before a customer will trust you enough to order from you. Persistence is key.

- document customers purchases. This helps you build a concise customer profile and build better customer relationships. You can target your promotions at the right customers. E.g. If Jane buys cleansers in the "Oily skin care" range, then next time you can suggest other products that also help combat oily skin problems. Better yet, throw in some complimentary samples for her to try.

- constantly find new methods for advertising. The more creative, the more likely they'll remember you. I once saw a woman wearing a t-shirt at the local shopping centre and it read: "I'm an Avon rep, ask me for a brochure". I wonder how well that worked for her...

- know when to back off! Some people will love receiving Avon brochures and others will hate it. As a general rule, after 3 letterbox drops and no order I start to drop every second campaign. After 3 more letterbox drops and still no order, I'll include a note that goes something like this "Hi, I hope you have been enjoying viewing the latest Avon Brochures. If you would like to continue receiving the brochures please email or sms me to let me know. Thank you from your friendly Avon Representative". If I don't receive a reply, I note down the address and happily distribute my brochure elsewhere. If you persist to annoy somebody, then I guarantee you that they will manage to tell at least 10 others and then the story goes... "I once had this annoying Avon lady...." I'm sure we've all heard it, now let's move on and try to avoid it. There are plenty of people that will welcome your business, so concentrate your efforts on them.

- be proud to be an Avon Rep. Successful Avon Reps love what they do and want everyone to know who they are. Get your name out there! When new customers are ready to buy, you want them to know exactly where to look!

Silicon Glove: Hand Cream

Uses: Dry hands, winter wrinkles, eczema, mechanics, people that work with water

Feels: very very smooth.
It glides on really smoothly and I can feel an immediate difference in the texture of my hands. It's not sticky and dries instantly, so I can immediately eat my apple.
If you've ever applied baby oil to your hands, this gives the same velvety smoothness, but it lasts longer than baby oil.
It's not oily. Sometimes when I use hand creams I find that it leaves oily marks on my laptop keys, as I type. I'm glad to report that this hand cream does not!

Smells: no strong fragrance.
Though it doesn't smell like crap either.
I hate smelling cream on my hands when I'm eating fruit and I'm delighted that this one offers me no such grief.

Notes:
6 hours later and I've even washed my hands several times since, my hands still have a distinct smoothness to it. I can see why the mechanics' always buy this product.
I gave this cream to a girl friend, that has eczema, and she immediately bought one.

Verdict: Dislike/like/love
LOVES IT! It's gone into my hand bag as an essential, along with my paw paw ointment.
